A tragic announcement yet another great icon in Anime and Manga industry is taken from us. Akiyuki Nosaka, the Naoki Prize-winning author of Grave of the Fireflies, was discovered unconscious by his wife at their home in Chiyoda, Tokyo after 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, an ambulance rushed him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead around 10:30 p.m.
The Novel Grave of the Fireflies was based on the experiences of his post-war experiences, where during which his real-life little sister died.
Studio Ghibli had adapted Nosaka’s Graveyard of the fireflies into a Anime Movie back in 1988, and this writer/podcast personally loves the movie. There was also a Live action Special made for television back in 2005.
He received the Naoki Prize, Japan’s most well-known literary award, in 1967 for this novel,America Hijiki, and other writings. In addition to his novels, he wrote the lyrics for the children’s song Omocha no Chachacha (Toys’ Cha-cha-cha).
